Thames - Tower Bridge and HMS Belfast
(River Thames, Tower Bridge, WW2’s HMS Belfast)

Walk beside London’s mighty river Thames looking at the port and maritime history of First World War.

This walk led by Blue Badge guide, Mark King explores how our island nation prepared for war and the crucial role expected to be played by the ‘Senior Service’ (Royal Navy).  We’ll look at our river and how this great, national port‘s global trade routes were affected dramatically, and we’ll hear about the contribution of sailors in the merchant marine.

Find one of only three Great War military ships remaining in British waters, hear about submariners, Master Mariners, ‘ships of the desert’ and discover what makes the Needle look slightly knackered even today!

Meet at Embankment Tube station, Thames Embankment exit. End near Blackfriars station.
