Victoria Station Platform 8
At 9.40am on the 11th November 1920 a gun carriage carrying the coffin of an unknown British soldier was conveyed from Victoria Station to Westminster Abbey. Our walking tour 94 years later follows the same route, starting at Platform 8 at Victoria Station and finishing outside Westminster Abbey. The walk represents the last journey of one of the 300,000 WW1 British soldiers who have no known grave. The original route took the coffin past the great memorials of Hyde Park Corner, Green Park, up the Mall from Buckingham Palace to Horse Guards and the Cenotaph (unveiled for the first time at 11.00am that very day) and finished at Westminster Abbey where the body was welcomed by a guard of honour of Victoria Cross holders and received the homage of the Empire. In the week that followed over a million visitors filed past the grave. It is now one of the most visited last resting places in the world.
