Heinrich Mathy

Commemorate the first effective air raid on London on the night of 8th September 1915.

Follow the path of destruction inflicted by redoubtable German Imperial Navy Zeppelin commanded by Kapitänleutnant Heinrich Mathy on its route from Holborn to Liverpool Street Station. Mathy delivered the most destructive bomb yet dropped on London. the 300kg ‘Liebesgabt’ – the Lovegift.

Mathy’s raid was a response to the Kaiser finally allowing the German High Command to raid west of Tower Bridge. Zeppelin L13 caused £500,000 damage on the City and killed and injured over 100 Londoners, while aiming to demoralise the civilian population. This is a genuine World War One Home Front ‘battlefield’ tour, a 2 hour walking tour across the historic centre of the City.
